이제는 조금 오래된 이야기이지만, 런던 로열 칼리지 오브 아트(Royal College of Art)에서 디자인을 공부하며 그 전까지 내가 경험해 보지 못했던 완전히 새로운 디자인과 예술의 개념들을 마주하게 되면서 충격을 받았던 기억이 납니다.
학교 로비에서 자기 키의 세 배는 되는 사다리를 세워 두고 하루 종일 해의 방향에 따라 변하는 그림자를 따라 그리던 학생, 동물의 뼈로 주얼리를 만들던 학생, 옷을 거꾸로 입거나 바지를 머리에 두르고 다니는 패션 디자인과 학생 등 각자만의 방식으로 창의성을 자유롭게 드러내는 다양한 아티스트들을 만날 수 있었습니다. 그들을 보며 저 역시 나만의 목소리를 표현하는 것이 아트의 진정한 가치라는 것을 몸소 느끼게 되었습니다.
졸업 후 몇몇 전시에 참여하면서 ‘배고픈 예술가’의 삶이 얼마나 쉽지 않은지 역시 가까이에서 보게 되었습니다. 저 또한 앞으로 살아가야 할 방향을 고민을 해야만했고, 실리콘밸리의 여러 테크 회사에서 인터렉션 디자이너로 오랜 시간을 보내게 되었습니다.
20년이상의 디자이너로서의 삶을 뒤로 하고, 회사를 떠난 뒤에는 제가 정말 하고 싶었던 일이 무엇인지 스스로에게 묻기 시작했고, 다양한 시도들을 해 보았습니다. 그 과정에서 마음 깊이 오래 담아 두었던 생각 하나가 다시 떠올랐습니다. 언젠가는 다시 예술 프로젝트로 돌아가 보고 싶다는 마음이었습니다.
그리고 지금은, 그때 만났던 아티스트들처럼 자신만의 목소리를 가진 아티스트들과 그들의 커뮤니티와의 협업을 탐구하고, 이름없는 아티스트들의 작업이 더 많은 사람들과 만날 수 있도록 기회를 만드려는 노력을 하고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 단순한 결과물이 아니라, 개인의 표현이 세상과 연결되는 과정을 함께 만들어가는 시도이기도 합니다.

Although it now feels like a long time ago, I still remember the moment when I encountered entirely new ideas about design and art while studying at the Royal College of Art in London. It was a shock in the best possible way — a world of creativity I had never experienced before.
In the school lobby, I saw a student set up a ladder three times their height and spend the entire day tracing the changing shadows of the sun. Another student created jewelry from animal bones. Fashion students walked around wearing their clothes inside out or balancing trousers on their heads. I was surrounded by artists who expressed their creativity freely and without hesitation. Watching them, I came to truly understand that the real value of art lies in expressing one’s own voice.
After graduation, as I participated in several exhibitions, I saw firsthand how difficult the life of a “starving artist” can be. I found myself reflecting on the direction of my own life, which led me to spend many years working as an interaction designer at various tech companies in Silicon Valley.
After leaving behind more than 20 years of my life as a designer, I began to ask myself what I truly wanted to do. I explored different paths, and in that process, a long-held thought resurfaced—my desire to one day return to art projects.
Now, I am exploring collaborations with artists who, like those I once encountered, have their own distinct voices, as well as with their communities. I am working to create opportunities for artists without names to have their work seen by a wider audience. This exhibition is not simply a final outcome, but an attempt to build a process where individual expression connects with the world.
